HAPPY NEW YEARS EVERYONE!!!!!
We have been big on starting and doing new things for the Holidays this year, mostly because it is just us, meaning Ike, D-boy, Mini Mouse, Ms. Marie and I. As some may know we moved from the midwest down south back in June, and what a move it was, what a process it was, how exciting and nerve wrecking and, and, and… so many other things included… The other thing was we moved away from everything and everyone we knew and now here we are miles away from our normal and learning to make new normals. It is fun but it is also big.
So back to us trying and starting new things for the Holidays, because we were not able to be with family for the Holidays (July 4th, First Day of School, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years to name a few) and yes I did add the First Day of School as a Holiday, because in our family we have traditions that involve the first day of school. Anyways, not only have I been doing things differently, I have also searched those things out from Pinterest, haha! Yeah, I’m pretty much hooked on pinterest, the link will or should take you to my boards.
The first new thing we did new this year was instead of inviting tons of people over to our house, grilling out (Ike doing the meat), and having a birthday celebration for Alesha we had a quiet birthday celebration here in Texas. No grilling out, no friends over for a big celebration, no setting off our own fireworks, just us (Ike, Mini Mouse, Ms. Marie and I. D-boy was away at camp that week). I cooked mini muffins, the girls made birthday cards, and then we went to the water park as well as got some new book shelves and put those together. You can see those posts here and here…
Next came the First Day of School, I haven’t posted that yet. But believe me it was a new day and a new thing. Normally for the first day of school, my sister Patience comes over and sees the kiddos off for school, takes pictures, gets into pictures and then goes home. This year we had to do all of that by skype, not the picture taking with her in them, but I did do picture taking and will post them soon. But for now I will just add one of them, one from this year and one from the last year or so. This first photo from this year and the second one from last year, as I was searching for pictures I realized I did not get a group photo of the kiddos this year.
The next Holiday would be Labor Day, which again was different. Last year we went to the Taste of Madison with my sister and her family and this year we barbecued and took family photos. The first one from 2011 and the second one from 2012!
Next comes Halloween, this was VERY different than last year. Every year when we lived in Wisconsin we went to the kiddos Godparents house and trick-or-treated, hung out with people we hadn’t seen the whole year, and had white chili (my favorite part)… this year, well we spent it at D-boys football playoff game (which they didn’t win!).
Next is Thanksgiving (which also happens to be my birthday time), this was so different than we normally are used to. Every year for as long as I can remember in our house we ALWAYS cooked a big meal for Thanksgiving, including mac-n-cheese, turkey, ham, homemade dressing, cranberry sauce, green beans, greens, cornbread, banana pudding, etc, etc, etc. We also have all of the family over for this meal and have a blast. This year however we are in Texas and so we cooked, but not as big and it was just our family and a friends family. We ate dinner at their place and had dessert at our place, we also did a nature hunt for the kiddos and played some cards. All in all it was a great day, but I sure did miss my family and all of their craziness 🙂 The first two pictures are from 2011 Thanksgiving prep, and the second 2 are from the hunt and the cute/yummy snacks we had that day!
Now we move onto Christmas… This Christmas was so much quieter than last year, LOL! Last year we had a big gathering, we had the family we “adopted’ for the Christmas over, my sister and her family and my younger siblings. It was a regular old shindig at our place and of course we had a feast! This year because it was just the 5 of us we did it small and quiet and spent most of the day in our jammies. It was great, and our meal for the day was seafood themed!
And last but not least is New Years, this wasn’t much different than last year. Since I’ve gotten older it is too much work to search out somewhere to go, have the perfect outfit, and find a sitter for Isaac and us to go out. Not to mention the cost of that one night. So we have always done something during the day with the kiddos and then brought in the new year with them, or like last year… sound asleep and waking up just in time or right after and saying Happy New Years to each other and going back to sleep! I can’t help it we are pretty lame, haha. Last year we went roller skating and met up with my best friend for lunch, this year we went Ice Skating and tried going out for a meal but instead hung around at home and ate some yummy food and danced the night away.
And that folks is our Holidays in review for the last year, LOL! But seriously, with each new Holiday new traditions and normals will start to happen. Mainly because we are miles and miles away from family, but also because we like being different and trying new things.
So far this New year has been a great one, how can it not be?! I am blessed to have such an amazing family, great friends (near and far), my health and waking up everyday. So I am living each day with a positive outlook, saying… It can only get better than this!
I look forward to the rest of this year and for the many memories we will make for us and our children! Have an awesome day guys and thanks for stopping by!
So a few months ago, well more like 5 months ago I pinned this idea on pinterest to my “gift ideas” board to send a box of something to someone as a gift. As soon as I seen the idea I had a person and an idea in mind, what I wasn’t sure of was… 1. when that person would arrive in her destination 2. what was going to be in the box 3. when I would ship the box off 4. how much it would cost. Now some of these questions are still up in the air, BUT they are easily figured out. You can check out the link here and see how cool it is!
Well anyways, I pushed the idea aside for a while and just enjoyed keeping in touch with the person I wanted to send the box too. I also wanted to have my children participate 100% in the box filling but alas I had a free moment a couple of nights ago and took it upon myself to do it alone. Now let me tell you who this box is for and what ideas I had for this awesome box and what it finally turned out to be, haha!
So this box is for one of my younger sisters who is currently living and learning over in Rwanda, I am so proud of her and if you would like you can check out her blog and her learning curve here. I know I am giving away the contents of her box early, but I think no matter what she will be excited and happy to receive this even if she already knows what’s coming. I can say that she might not know right way, the joys of spotty internet service…
My grand ideas were of this magnificent box that was filled with yellow things to help brighten her day and give her a taste of home. I also wanted to send it for Christmas, but again, I enjoyed my couch more… Anyways, I needed to go and get some Valetines’ Day things for the girls classrooms and some things for our girls science fair projects (which we still have yet to start, and it’s due January 23rd…). And while I was at the store I got this AH-MAZING idea, why not do the box in RED, my FAVORITE color of course. Not to mention it is a Valentine Box, which is how The Red Box of Love came into action. Anyways, I am talking too much.. enjoy 🙂
