Ms. Marie’s New Ears

This is going to be a quick post because I feel bad that I haven’t “kept” up on my posting of pictures. But I have been taking photos, and coming up with ideas for posts. I am just super exhausted and overwhelmed… The school semester has officially started and I am still trying to figure out what I was smoking when I signed up for all of these classes for this semester… Oh wait, that’s right I wanted to Graduate in May!

So Ms. Marie has a mild to moderate hearing loss, which we found out about shortly after she was born in 2007. She was born at 33 weeks and they believe that her prematurity is the cause of her hearing loss, we have taken her to do tons of testing and it is a sensorineuro (sp) hearing loss. Anyways, her ears grew big enough for her to get hearing aids shortly before she turned one.

Those first hearing aids were expensive and new and we had no idea what we were doing. Within the first month her hearing aids were taken back into the Audiologists at least  10-15 times, she thought they were best for chewing, throwing, and hiding as well as losing pieces of them… Yeah, I was panicking because we had to come up with $2500 and this is how she wanted to treat them. Not only that but she HATED wearing them, and whenever she got the chance she pulled those suckers out and destroyed them. AHHHHHH! It was so frustrating and so long ago.

Fast forward 3 years and Ms. Marie is now 4 and she is in LOVE with her “ears”, that is what we all call them. She has finally realized that using her ears is very beneficial to her and she can hear better, and interact with her classmates better. Now fast forward to the last few months. Ms. Marie has an IEP that includes using a speech pathologists and an ASL teacher, who are FREAKING AWESOME! Anyways, late last year they asked if we wanted to learn about and try out an FM system for Marie in school. They said because we might want to use an FM system we needed to let her Audiologists know so that she can do something with her aids. So lucky us we already had an appointment scheduled.

We went to this appointment and talked to our Audiologist and told her about wanting to use an FM system, and do you know what she says…? Have you guys gotten new hearing aids since the new laws have been enacted…?! My response, why no we have not!

With all of the new laws and insurance changes that took place in January 2012, all of the insurance companies will pay for hearing aids and anything related to hearing aids for children under 18 100%… so what that meant for us… Ms. Marie gets NEW EARS FOR FREEEEEEEEE :-) And that in a nutshell is how Ms. Marie got the new awesome purple aids with pink, purple and clear molds… Not only that but the new aids have awesome new technology and they work PERFECTLY with the FM system. So there you go, sit back and enjoy the pictures of Ms. Marie’s new Ears and share with her the EXCITEMENT she had with getting her new ears!

Good Night Folks, and talk to you later :-)
